THE BURNING is the fourth in the western series, A Jess Williams Novel. In book three, Jess rescues a nice family of four and escorts them to where they plan on building a new homestead on land they own. In book four, Jess returns to help the family finish building their home and when he gets there, he finds out that all four of them have been murdered and their home burned down to the ground by the three Bolin brothers, Lance, Felix and Burt. Before killing the two children, Jessica and Harold, Burt Bolin does some unthinkable things to them. Jess sets off on their trail, hell-bent to make them pay for what they did.
Along the way, Jess runs into United States Marshal Frank Reedy who asks Jess to detour from hunting the Bolin brothers and help the Marshal deal with a rich rancher, Evan Dwight, who is running out the other small ranchers in the area; and if they don't sell cheap, they end up dead.
Jess again finds himself in a war with dozens of hired guns, but in the end, Jess and Marshal Reedy are still standing, and Evan Dwight ends up in the ground. When that is over, Jess continues on his hunt for the Bolins, and he never stops until he kills every last one of them. To make his job even more difficult, it seems a rich banker from New York City has placed a ten thousand blood bounty on his head because Jess killed his brother, and every hired gun in the west is looking to collect the blood bounty. An exciting, action-packed novel you won't be able to put down.

THE BURNING Fourth in a Series of Jess Williams Westerns A Jess Williams Western Book 4 edition by Robert J Thomas Literature Fiction eBooks

Don't get me wrong...I really liked this book, if you can call 144 pages a book, not a novella. I only slightly minded paying as much, or more, than the earlier full sized versions. I enjoyed the stories, enough to buy four of them, but I won't ever buy another one...and this is the reason. I really loathed getting to the end of the last chapter, getting a cliffhanger set up, and actually being told by the author...if you want to know how this turns out, you will have to buy the next book...!!!!! REALLY???

Not acceptable! You expect that kind of thing when it says, "read here for an excerpt from the next book". To use a blatant set up, to try to force your reader to buy another book, is poorly done, no matter how interesting the book is! I truly regret not continuing this series. As I said, I really liked them, and loved the unusual subplot about the gun and holster! I just will not allow any author, no matter how good he or she thinks they are, to jack me around like that in a book I payed for. And, FYI Mr. Thomas, $3.99 for 144 pages still equals the full price for a full length book...no deal here, so no excuses for your poor personal standards!

THE BURNING Fourth in a Series of Jess Williams Westerns A Jess Williams Western Book 4 edition by Robert J Thomas Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

These stories just keep getting better. Just bought number 5 and can't wait to get started. Jess Williams is a cool customer when confronting those murderers and rapists he so diligently tracks down. The slime of the earth who do not deserve the chance Jess so graciously gives them. I recommend this novel to all you cowboy fans. Giddy up.
Although this series is totally unbelievably it really keeps me entertained. Nobody could be as lucky as Jess Williams. I am reading the whole series starting from book #1. I like the gun fighting action and usually read the whole book in 2-3 evenings. The series fits my kind of reading although many will disagree. It's non stop the whole book.
Jess Williams continues his search for wanted men and their bounty. I liked the story, the action, and old-fashioned justice doled out to the deserving culprits. If you can accept the fact that Jess is infallible with a gun, quicker than anyone, and never misses, you can roll along with the tale and know that he will survive all attempts upon his life - after all, he needs to survive to make it into the next series.
I really enjoyed this story until the dreaded cliff-hanger ending. The author informs the reader they will need to purchase the next in the series to find out what happens. That dropped my review down to two stars.

I despise cliff-hanger endings and will not follow the series or the author.
Remember this is my personal opinion.
The first three books were very nicely written. I enjoyed the main theme that men that rape and kill for no reason should meet someone like Jess. But I'm not sure that the author any longer has a clue as to what the he'll he's writing. No one that uses weapons would drink like the characters in these latest stories, and handle weapons or trust anyone who drank that heavy watch his back. Sorry but your way off where you started
I received this book for free and I over paid. Not worth reading, even if it was free.

The storyline is weak, contrived. There's no detail to the story, and the author doesn't build the characters. Moreover, the characters aren't believable their actions and words don't make sense. No logical person would do some off the things they do. The author gets the facts across, but doesn't know how to tell a good story.

The book never saw an editor, as evidenced by the terrible spelling and grammar. All and all, not a good read.
When Jess had issued justice to his twin brother and Father he returned to his home, Black Creek, Kansas. He visited the gravesite of his family and told him he had made their killers suffer hard before he killed each one as he had vowed to do. He then rode into town to see his friend the Sherrif. He later headed out again on the trail. He went to Abeline, Texas to visit friends, the Brown family he had met while tracking. Jess as I stated in another review had helped the them get a ranch started on a plot of land the man had purchased. When he was informed that they had all been murdered, his wife, daughter, son and his friend. The wife, daughter and son had been sexually abused. by three men, the Brolin brothers and they had burned the farm to the ground with the family inside. This angered Jess. He visited their graves outside of town and vowed to them the same as he had done his family to make the brothers suffer before killing them. He visited the General , gathered supplies of ammunition, food, and and set out to revenge their death.
